The Monroe County Historical Association is pleased to announce a free program open to the public. Local historian Ed Flory will give a presentation titled, “Hotels & Boarding Houses of the Stroudsburgs.” This program is part of the popular Third Thursday Lecture Series and will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. at the Middle Smithfield Township Community & Cultural Center, 5200 Milford Road, East Stroudsburg. During the pandemic many turned to new hobbies and interests, and Ed Flory was no exception. He began collecting postcards and photographs of Monroe County’s hotels and boarding houses, with no idea of the size of the project in which he had become involved. His collection has now grown to over six hundred images, and he has meticulously researched each of these historic properties. Mr. Flory will share his research in a presentation focusing on the hotels and boarding houses of Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg. Starting with the earliest establishments and continuing through the 1940s, he will showcase fascinating photos and postcard images while discussing the history of each hotel. This will include information about proprietors, years of operation, amenities, rates charged, and other interesting facts. A lifelong resident of East Stroudsburg with a deep interest in the area’s history, Mr. Flory’s family occupied the oldest home in East Stroudsburg from 1780 until 2002, giving him a unique perspective on the borough’s development. Mr. Flory is a retired landscape architect who owned the Plants & Design Garden Center on Lenox Avenue for nearly forty years. The Third Thursday Lecture Series is free, but reservations are suggested due to limited space. For additional information or to make a reservation, please contact the Monroe County Historical Association office at (570) 421-7703 or admin@monroehistorical.org.
